Worker-Sponsored Survey for Asbestosis

Abstract
A local union initiated a survey to assess the possibility of asbestosis in a wall board manufacturing operation. Fifty-seven workers were examined by questionnaire, pulmonary function tests, and limited physical examination. Definite evidence of an excess of pulmonary disease was found. The prevalent respiratory syndrome was compatible with asbestosis, was highly correlated with length of asbestos exposure, and could not be explained by smoking or other known environmental factors. Through the use of prediction equations and stepwise regression analysis, disease was proved without a control group. The company’s refusal to release the x-ray films did not prevent the demonstration of excessive disease in this population.
