The background, design, methodology and population sample of a study of nutrition in pregnancy are described. This study embraced 2,338 pregnant white women cared for in the prenatal clinic of Vanderbilt University Hospital during the period from September, 1945, to February, 1949. The limited available data on nutritional assessments of pregnant or lactating women within the general population of the region are summarized. Keywords
