Abstract
The efficacy and toxicity of cefoxitin sodium and cephalothin have been compared in a clinical study. For 50 patients treated with cefoxitin and 35 treated with cephalothin, clinical response was favourable in 86% and 68% respectively. Cephalothin was not effective in the treatment of anaerobic Gram-negative infections. Cefoxitin was effective in the treatment of septicaemia, osteomyelitis, pulmonary infections, and pyelonephritis caused by cephalothin-resistant organisms. Cefoxitin was also effective in the treatment of infections by the anaerobic pathogen Bacteroides . No major haematologic, hepatic, or renal toxicity was encountered in patients treated with either drug. Keywords
