AFFERENT FIBERS IN MUSCLE NERVES

Abstract
Afferent nerve supply to a number of hindlimb muscles was studied histologically (osmic acid) following degeneration of motor fibers. All sizes of myelinated fibers were found in all the muscle nerves, the upper limit varying from one nerve to another. The fibers, in categories of diam,, were found to be clustered about 3 peaks of numerical preponderance centered at 15-17, 6-7 and at 3 microns. Concerning the upper limit in diam. of muscle afferent fibers, the observations indicated that: more proximal muscles receive larger afferent fibers than do more distal muscles; extensor muscles receive larger fibers than do their flexor antagonists; many afferent fibers to pale leads of an extensor muscle are larger than any to the red fraction of the same muscle.
