Abstract
Recent research reported in this paper shows that lubrication of pivot bearings of electric watthour meters is essential for maximum bearing life. The performance of these bearings represents the most important mechanical factor in sustained meter accuracy. The comparatively high rate of wear in a new bearing is found to decrease rapidly with use, finally becoming extremely small. With a well lubricated bearing, the effect of the increased friction resulting from wear on the calibration of the meter is shown to be negligible. A jewel screw of new design, having a large oil reservoir to provide for proper lubrication over a long period of time, also is described. Keywords
