THE DETECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF PEDIATRIC DIFFICULTIES CREATED BY DIVORCE

Abstract
A large segment of the pediatric population comes from homes where the parents are divorced. These children have special emotional problems in growing up without both parents to help and guide them. Pediatricians may face many such family situations where emotional problems are disguished. Action by the physician can reveal the basic problems and help establish better conditions for the emotional development of these children. Cases typifying problems of divorced families are presented and the suggested pediatric handling is described. The role of hostility between the parents is stressed and the need for the physicians to bring this out in the open in order to control it. It is necessary for the pediatrician to state clearly the purpose and the limits of his intervention in order to bring specific help to the children and to avoid vague and ineffective counselling.
