Abstract
We introduce a method based on the split-step fast-Fourier-transform algorithm that generates accurate results for the Green function associated with arbitrary waveguide or fiber elements and permits modeling of the propagation of an electric field over large distances through periodically perturbed graded-index elements. As an example, we consider here the case of a selectively excited, sinusoidally perturbed graded-index optical waveguide and compute the power transfer from a given mode and the associated development of the near field as a function of propagation distance. Keywords
