Abstract
Summary 1. The use of media treated with streptomycin or penicillin increased the number of positive cultures of E. histolytica obtained from stool specimens containing cysts. 2. It seemed that the favorable influence on amebic cultivation was due to the inhibition of the mixed bacterial flora induced by these drugs. 3. Streptomycin suppressed the aerobic bacteria in some of the cultures and it was observed that slants of Endamoeba medium overlaid with serum-saline supported the growth of certain anaerobic bacteria under aerobic conditions. 4. In some instances, failure of amebic cultivation may have been related to antibiotic influences created by the microbiologic population. Keywords
