Changing Partisanship among Southern Party Activists

Abstract
Although some research provides evidence that party conversions are most common among the uninformed and may even be random, more recent work suggests that there is a strong ideological congruence between converts and their new party. This analysis uses data collected by the 1984 Comparative Party Activists Project to predict partisan conversion among activists, focusing on the South. After taking into consideration previous political socialization and accumulated political experience, it is attitudes on issues that best predict party switching.
