A Method for the Automatic Separation of the Images of Galaxies and Stars from Measurements Made with the Cosmos Machine

Abstract
A method has been developed which allows the computer to distinguish automatically between the images of galaxies and those of stars from measurements made with the COSMOS automatic plate-measuring machine at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Results have indicated that a 90–95 per cent separation between galaxies and stars is possible.
