Abstract
Banding the suprarenal abdominal aorta in rats resulted in a 26% increase in the ratio of left ventricular weight to body weight. The maximum left ventricular hypertrophy was attained on the sixth day following the banding. There was also a 16% increase in the ratio of right ventricular weight to body weight. There was no evidence of congestive heart failure. The method described is technically simple, hypertrophy develops rapidly, and it results in a reproducible degree of hypertrophy. The method has distinct advantages over other methods used to produce cardiac hypertrophy in rats such as banding the thoracic aorta, arteriovenous fistula, exercise, anaemia, and treatment with sympathomimetic drugs and thyroxine. Keywords
