Abstract
Group A hemolytic streptococci exposed to trypsin (25 ug/ml) for 30 min. undergo a number of changes on or near the cell wall which do not effect viability but significantly alter the permeability of the cells. Substantial quantities of intracellular magnesium and arginine are lost and decreased rates of glycolysis are observed. Stimulation of glycolysis by adenosine triphosphate or arginine can be observed with trypsin treated cells but not normal cells. Trypsin treated streptococci incorporate more radio-active amino acids into cellular protein and synthesize more streptolysin O than normal cells in the absence of proliferation. Keywords
