Near-anode instability of gas flow glow discharge

Abstract
Near-anode plasmas of glow discharges in transverse laminar gas flows are unstable with respect to formation of bright stripes along a flow. The origin of this instability is the negative differential resistance of an anode layer. Linear perturbation theory gives the stability region boundary. To determine the period of the structure, the nonlinear theory is developed, the conclusions from which agree with experiment.
