The breakdown of phthalates in human serum and plasma and their determination in blood products.

Abstract
Di 2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), mono 2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) and phthalic acid (PA) in human serum or plasma were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and serum or plasma pretreatment methods were also studied. The amount of these compounds in flexible bags which migrated into blood products was studied and whether MEHP and PA in blood products were produced by enzymatic action to DEHP was determined. From the comparison of the amount of these compounds in blood products and the amount in flexible bags, it was shown that MEHP and PA were produced by the action of lipase and esterase on DEHP. The action of esterase was greater and the pathway of MEHP to PA was a rate determining step of DEHP hydrolysis.
