Abstract
An overview of limited research on alcohol and black youth is presented along with issues and theoretical viewpoints related to the topic. A national survey and several rural studies indicate no significant differences in drinking patterns; however, some evidence shows slightly lower rates of drinkers and heavy drinkers for black youth. Drinking patterns of urban black youth are not conclusive; nevertheless, a prevalence of alcohol-related problems is suggested. There is need for a well defined theoretical framework, as well as a greater number of studies on alcohol and black youth, especially those at high risk for alcohol problems. Keywords
