Abstract
This paper examines the evidence, determined from ground-based observations alone, for the existence of protons, neutrons and electrons that are precipitated to auroral heights-of around 100 km. The evidence is divided into three sections: the direct observations, the ionizing effects and the measurement of magnetic disturbances that are consequences of particle penetration. Keywords
