Abstract
This paper describes an architecture for a near-real-time billing system for use in a next-generation communications environment. The specifications of the architecture called for an open system that could scale from environments supporting a few thousand customers to those supporting hundreds of millions while maintaining the reliability and flexibility of adding new services required by modern communications service providers. The architecture was designed using a distributed processing environment incorporating lightweight hierarchical focused trading and a lightweight transactional engine. The architecture is described; following the description are the results of a simulation built to model performance.
