Toxin Production by Cristulariella pyramidalis

Abstract
C. pyramidalis causes zonate leafspots and defoliation in the pinto bean, Phaseolus vulgaris. The lesions associated with C. pyramidalis infection rapidly enlarge and often expand along leaf veins. This suggests that a chemical toxin may be associated with this fungus. Using P. vulgaris as the test plant, attempts were made to isolate the toxin. The compound must have a low MW since it readily passed through a dialysis membrane. It remained active after autoclaving, showing that it is heat stable.
