Comparison of a Time Diary and Recall Questionnaire for Surveying Leisure Activities

Abstract
Sample participation rates in 35 leisure activities, obtained from responses to recall questionnaires, were compared to those obtained from responses to time diaries for a sample of 30 university students. The correlation between recall questionnaire and diary statistics on frequencies of participation in the activities was r =.88 (p <.005). The correlation between frequencies from the recall questionnaires and amounts of time spent in the activities, obtained from the time diaries, was r =.78 (p <.005). The implications of these results for the use of recall questionnaires or time diaries in leisure surveys were discussed. It was concluded that in some kinds of studies where time diaries have been med, the simpler and more economical recall questionnaires would have been sufficient.
