Rubella Immunization: A Five-Year Progress Report

Abstract
This month, June, 1974, is the 10th anniversary of one of the most extensive rubella epidemics ever recorded in the United States. The subsequent toll was measured in terms of personal tragedy for many thousands of families who have had to care for their multi-handicapped children. More than 20,000 infants were born with one or more of the following manifestations of congenital rubella: eye lesions such as cataract and glaucoma; deafness; cardiac malformations; and Central-nervous-system involvement leading to severe behavior disorders, cerebral palsy and mental retardation.This month is also the fifth anniversary of the licensure of live, attenuated rubella-virus . . .
