New Results on the Brightness Matching of Heterochromatic Stimuli

Abstract
In this paper the authors report extensive new data on the ratio of the luminance of an achromatic stimulus to the luminance of chromatic stimuli when the chromatic and achromatic stimuli are perceived to be brightness matches. These brightness to luminance ratios indicate that there are significant discrepancies between photometrically measured luminance and perceived brightness for heterochromatic stimuli. Major new findings are that the variability of heterochromatic matching is linearly related to the brightness to luminance ratio and that the heterochromatic match is insensitive to the ratio of surround luminance to reference luminance.
