Abstract
To the Editor: Concerning the Sounding Board article by Page (N Engl J Med 290:338–340, 1974), I object first of all to the title, "Beware — the Anaerobe Bandwagon." In past years many clinicians and bacteriologists have been ill informed about the prevalence and nature of anaerobic infections, and only recently has there been much enlightenment in this area. Anaerobic infections are common, and must be considered in sepsis of unknown cause.I endorse Dr. Page's comments on the importance of surgical management of infections and their predisposing causes and the need for a rational approach to antimicrobial therapy.
