Abstract
Two trials were conducted with beef steers to determine the digestion coefficients of the proximate fractions and the TDN of CSH. In trial 1, the value for CSH as determined by difference, using alfalfa hay, was 38%. However, a linear regression indicated that the TDN of the CSH in trial 1 was 44%. The CSH appeared to reduce the digestibility of alfalfa hay. The ADF content of CSH on a dry matter basis was 64% as compared with 47% crude fiber by the Weende method. In a 72% CSH ration, the TDN of CSH on a dry matter basis was estimated to be 44%. The digestibility of the ADF in the high hull ration was 39% as compared with 27% when determined by difference. It was calculated that the TDN of CSH in a growing trial was 44% on a dry matter basis. The TDN of CSH estimated by the three latter methods are in good agreement and appear to be approximately 44% on a dry matter basis or 40% on a 90% dry matter basis. Copyright © 1969.
