Abstract
In 1969 an interesting case report appeared in the British Journal of Psychiatry. 1 It described a woman in her 40's who was given some medicine described as “a new major tranquillizer without any side effects." Satisfied with the new treatment—as she had not been with reserpine and three phenothiazines—she took two tablets daily for 4 years. Having been given a more responsible job, the patient began to suffer from headaches, anxiety and insomnia. Meprobamate failed to help, so she increased the dosage of her old tablets. Only then did she feel better. Keywords
