CELL MODULATION IN LIVER PATHOLOGY

Abstract
In the livers of mice fed diets containing 0.05% a-naphthyl-isothiocyanate or 0.04% o-aminoazotoluene the development of masses of bile ducts is preceded by reorganization of the parenchymal cells so they acquire a tubular orientation around small lumina, and some lumina are bounded in part by duct cells and in part by parenchymal cells. Mitotic figures in the developing ducts are very rare, which suggests that the new duct cells do not arise by division of preexisting duct cells. The duct cells may be formed by the transformation of parenchymal cells.
