Increase of temperature in ascending basalt magma

Abstract
"The ascent of basalt magma through mantle material will be accompanied by a release of gravitational energy. Under special conditions this could cause heating of the magma of up to 1 1/2 cal/g/km of ascent. Such heating might explain the formation of some magnesium-rich magmas."
