Abstract
The flow field ahead of a cylinder moving in a salt stratified fluid consists of a large region of recirculating flow adjoining the cylinder, and a wake-like region extending farther upstream. The measured length of the recirculation region agrees with the theoretical results of Graebel (1969), if allowance is made for the influence of the tank end wall. Diffusion of salinity is noticeable in the recirculation region. Keywords
