Comparative Studies on Acclimatization of Mice to Carbon Monoxide and to Low Oxygen

Abstract
The blood O2 capacity increased 50% and the hematocrit ratio 85% in mice during a 14 day exposure to a simulated altitude of 16,000 ft. or during an exposure of similar duration to CO concns. up to 0.15%. The blood CO2 capacity of mice exposed to the low O2 diminished, but that of those exposed to CO increased slightly. Mice acclimatized to low O2 by the type of exposure mentioned above can survive in an atmosphere of 0.25% CO longer than can control mice. Conversely mice acclimatized to CO show better tolerance than do control mice to a simulated altitude of 34,000 ft.
