Abstract
“Monofocal” antibody against the 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) haptenic group was obtained from the culture fluids of splenic fragments stimulated in vitro. The antibody was purified and compared with purified serum anti-DNP antibody. The “monofocal” antibodies were shown to bind hapten homogeneously and to have a more restricted electrophoretic mobility than serum antibody. These “monofocal” antibodies differed markedly from one another in their electrophoretic mobilities, affinity for hapten and ease of purification from an immunoadsorbent. From these results it was concluded that serum antibody represents a pool of the products of a variety of clones each producing a homogeneous antibody population.
