A New Method for Quantitation of Tumor Growth In Situ: Measurement by Plethysmography2

Abstract
Plethysmography (volumetric measurement by fluid displacement) was used to quantitate changes in tumor volume, in situ, with the mouse mammary tumor as a model system. The technique relied on the ability to propagate tumors subplantarly in susceptible mouse strains. Such tumors retained the histologic features of the original mouse mammary adenocarcinoma and could be serially propagated subplantarly, subcutaneously, and intradermally. The method is precise and convenient for assessingchanges in tumor volume without altering the relationship between the tumor and its host.
