Abstract
The subsequent risk for Parkinson''s disease among individuals with a prior diagnosis of herpes zoster was investigated in the population of Rochester, Minnesota. The relative risk of Parkinson''s disease in the incidence cohort with herpes zoster who were followed for 9,389 person-years was 0.7 (0.18–1.68). The relative frequency of antecedent herpes zoster in a cohort of 138 persons with Parkinson''s disease was 1.3 (0.16–4.82) compared to matched controls. The power of the study was limited, with a 90 % probability of detecting a relative risk of 3.1. The investigation does not support an association between herpes zoster and subsequent Parkinson''s disease; however, the limited power of the study cannot exclude such an association. Keywords
