Abstract
Presentation of a patient in whom the disease process was limited to the left main stem bronchus and mimicked bronchogenic carcinoma. Diagnostic studies were repeatedly negative. Because of repeated attacks of pneumonitis secondary to bronchial obstruction, pneumonectomy was attempted, but was unsuccessful. This disease process is characterized by osseous and cartilagenous growths between the tracheal and bronchial rings. The etiology of these osteoma-like growths is not known, but is due possibly to direct metaplasia of elastic connective tissue cells into cartilage cells. These cartilage cells become calcified. These islands are then invaded by connective tissue that is rich in blood vessels, resulting in the formation of marrow cavities lined with osteoblasts. Keywords
