Abstract
Transmission of a 10 Gbit/s return-to-zero (RZ) signal at 1300 nm over 550 km of standard singlemode fibre is demonstrated. The effect of semiconductor optical amplifiers, different filter techniques and the variation of the carrier wavelength around the gain maximum on the transmission capacity is experimentally and numerically studied. Keywords
