Abstract
Although new display technologies have reduced the cost and improved the quality of stereoscopic 3-D video displays, the question remains: when is the extra cost of a 3-D system justified by improved task performance? This paper will discuss: generic characteristics of tasks that are likely to benefit from 3-D techniques, common misconceptions about 3-D display limitations, problems of properly evaluating cost/benefit tradeoffs, and often-overlooked side-benefits of stereoscopic systems.© (1988) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
