Strong explosions in plane stratified media

Abstract
The problem of a strong explosion in a plane stratified medium is studied using two different axisymmetric codes. We find that the propagation of the shocks is quite well described by an approximation based on locally radial flow. We also find that such explosions cannot produce strong, well-collimated jets. We consider radiative cooling and estimate the amount of hot gas produced by a supernova in the galactic density distribution.
