On-site Seizure Clinic

Abstract
• A weekly seizure clinic was established at an institution for patients with mental retardation. After two years, a study demonstrated the following significant changes in clinic patients: (1) a reduction in the practice of anticonvulsant polypharmacy; (2) a reduction in the frequency of administration of anticonvulsant drugs; (3) a greater number of drugs whose serum concentration was appropriate; (4) a reduction in the use of psychotropic drugs; (5) weight gain; (6) diminished injuries; and (7) a fourfold increase in drug costs. These changes were not seen previously, when the patients were examined at a distant neurology clinic.
