Abstract
A preparation method for birefringent plastic bulk material is presented. A plastic such as poly(α-methylstyrene) takes a birefringent orientation when a high dc electric field is applied to its molten phase. This phenomenon is maintained even in a solid phase after decreasing the temperature and hence the birefringent plastic material is formed. It is noticeable that the magnitude of birefringence in the bulk plastic prepared here is controllable. Keywords
