Abstract
"An experiment designed to test Webb's conclusions concerning the action of 'irrelevant' drives was performed with the addition of an experimental control over the effect of drive level upon preconditioning response strength." A bar pressing apparatus was used. Three groups of male albino rats were matched on the basis of operant-level responding under the irrelevant drive, thirst, prior to conditioning. Conditioning took place under 11 hrs hunger drive and extinction under 0, 11, or 22 hours thirst drive. Webb's findings were confirmed, the response strength transfers to an irrelevant drive.
