Abstract
Tests to determine the comparative efficiency of various insects to transmit cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) or watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) to cantaloupes were made in 1960 and 1961. The seven species of aphids tested transmitted either one or both of these viruses. Insects other than aphids failed to transmit either of the viruses. The rusty plum aphid (Hysteroneura setariae (Thomas)) and the lettuce seed stem aphid (Macrosiphum barri Essig) have not been previously reported as vectors of WMV and this account is the first of the rusty plum aphid as a vector of CMV from cantaloup to cantaloup. The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae (Sulzer)) was the most efficient vector of both CMV and WMV to cantaloups.
