Abstract
To test the hypotheses that mechanical trauma to muscular tissue as a result of repeated intramuscular injections of physiologic saline would evoke an alteration in the histologic structure of the muscular tissue and that the clearance rate of I131 hippuran from an area previously injured by repeated intramuscular injections would be less than that from a noninjured area, a lesion was induced in the left vastus lateralis muscle of 12 rabbits by injections of the saline twice a day, six days a week for varied lengths of time. The right leg remained intact and served as control leg. To determine clearance rates, seven animals were anesthetized and injections of I131 hippuran solution were made into the induced lesions on the experimental leg and into the comparable site of the control leg. Clearance rates were determined by a “renogram washout” program. Seventy-two hours after clearance rate data had been obtained, the animals were sacrificed for gross histological examination of the sites. The presence of fibrotic and inflammatory changes in rabbits that did not receive hippuran and the clearance rate data, as analyzed by the sign test (p = .05), supported both hypotheses. Keywords
