Momentum Diffusion for Coupled Atom-Cavity Oscillators
Abstract
The momentum diffusion of free-space laser cooling has a natural correspondence in optical cavities when the internal state of the atom is treated as a harmonic oscillator. A unified picture is obtained, in which a fluctuating dipole is coupled to a classical cavity field, and a fluctuating cavity field is coupled to a classical dipole. Both contributions together explain the large loss rates observed in cavity QED experiments with single trapped atoms in the strong-coupling regime. This sets severe limitations for applications in quantum information science. Keywords
