Abstract
A recently published experimental study on the Penning ionisation of Ar by metastable Ne*(3P2) atoms shows non-statistical population of the fine-structure levels of the argon ions. The authors develop a theoretical treatment which allows these results to be interpreted. The data can be understood if one assumes that the two electrons which are active in the process do not exchange angular momentum. Keywords
