Abstract
The success of David P. Campbell and John L. Holland's merger of Holland's theory of vocational types and empirical SVIB research of Strong suggests that an extension of Holland's theory to the item level of the Strong could provide useful descriptions of the item content. To describe the items, the statistical design of contrast groups was employed to assign each item a Holland code. This procedure required selection of criterion and reference contrast groups, calculation of “like” response percentages for each contrast group for every possible SCII item, calculation of percentage differences between criterion and reference groups, and assignment of Holland codes based on the item percentage differences. Results of assigning Holland codes to items seemed reasonable, and the codes may be used in future item pool revisions to balance item content, to eliminate poorly defined items, and to select items that are perceived identically by females and males.
