Abstract
It has long been known that emotional shock is an important factor in the onset of hyperthyroidism. Recent findings indicate that "emotional stresses of considerable severity precede the onset of hyperthyroidism in over 90% of the cases." The clinical symptoms of the disease present a physiol. picture similar to that of a person in a state of fear and terror. A rather specific type of emotional stress is involved. There is the disruption or threat of disruption of the most treasured interpersonal relationship of the patient. The patient reacts in a deeply emotional way because of strong dependence on the relationship. A psychiatric orientation is very important in these cases; it improves the therapy and management of the hyperthyroid patient. Keywords
