Abstract
Using the Parkes 64-m telescope we have made observations of the 5-GHz formaldehyde absorption line at 226 positions in the direction of southern dark nebulae. The absorption line was detected at 169 of these positions. Extended integrations were obtained on 12 objects and the resulting profiles are used to determine excitation temperatures, optical depths and line velocities by least-squares fitting of model profiles. The distribution of H2CO was mapped in three larger objects, L1642, DC 303.5 – 14.4 and DC 359.9 – 18.1 (the CrA dark cloud). The resultant maps are compared with other molecular-line observations. Keywords
