Abstract
This year-long study is based upon tape recorded interviews and participant observational techniques. The data reveal that the promise of this isolated, white, middle- to upper-class tract home retirement community to provide older persons with an “active way of life” went unfulfilled. Notwithstanding this, the data are contrary to the expectations of the Disengagement Theory. Keywords
