Abstract
It is remarkable that nearly all progressive movements, especially socialist ones, have been fueled by a demand for education: to an astonishing but largely unstudied degree, activists from all sorts of oppressed groups have devoted themselves to mental selfimprovement, and made large sacrifices to provide their children with educational opportunities which they themselves never had.
