Abstract
A 6-month comparative study at the Bayview Community Mental Health Center, Miami, compared the effectiveness of treatment modalities in a population of persons with chronic schizophrenia. The outcome measure was recidivism (number of inpatient hospital days). Sixty persons with lengthy psychiatric histories were voluntary subjects. They were divided into two groups: those attending the FOCUS House Rehabilitation Program, and those who were on routine medication maintenance. The two groups were each subdivided into three groups, according to their medication modality. The study yielded results that had implications for medication management and psychosocial rehabilitation as important tools to reduce recidivism in this chronic population.
