Abstract
While not optimum for any one type of traffic, asynchronous transfer mode is clearly the best compromise between the conflicting needs of data, voice, and video. The most interesting question is not whether ATM will take over the data communications highway, but how it will be phased in. The author describes how anticipating how wide- and local-area networks will shift into asynchronous transfer mode requires a grasp of today's technologies.
