Formation of peroxyacyl‐ and alkyl nitrates in irradiations of gasoline vapours under atmospheric conditions

Abstract
Irradiations of headspace of leaded premium, leaded regular and unleaded premium gasolines in the presence of NO2 at room temperature and pressure, in addition to PAN and PPN formed peroxyisobutyl and peroxybutyl nitrate and from the alkyl nitrates 2‐isobutyl‐, 2‐isopentyl‐, 4‐isopentyl and 2‐pentyl nitrate. While peroxyacyl nitrates are correlated with the concentration of specific olefins, 2‐isopentyl nitrate, the most abundant alkyl nitrate formed, is correlated with the high isopentane contents of the irradiated vapours.
